About SAT Biology Exam

The SAT Biology Exam test your understanding of the major concepts of biology typically learned in high school and is an excellent way to showcase your achievements.Taking the SAT Subject Test in either Biology Ecological or Biology Molecular can help you indicate to colleges that you are interested in focusing on science.

SAT Biology Grades

The SAT grading system has a raw score and a scaled score. The Raw score is determined as 1 mark per question currectly answered. Penalties in terms of negative marks are added to discourage guessing. The raw score of the exam is then rounded off, and then scaled to a score between 200-800 points, which are used as the final score.

SAT Grades Definition
700-800 Extremely Well Qualified
600-700 Well Qualified
500-600 Qualified
400-500 Possibly Qualified
200-400 No Recommendation

SAT Exam Calculator Policy

Calculators are NOT permitted in SAT Biology Exam as the problem solving requires simple numerical calculations.

The Exam

The SAT Biology exam runs for 60 minutes. All questions have a Raw score of 1 for every correct answer and a deduction of -1/4 for every incorrect answer.

About the SAT Biology Exam

Dates of Exam: Tentative test dates- Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, May & June.every year

SAT – II : Biology
The SAT- II biology is further divided into two parts:

  1. Biology Ecological (Biology E)
  2. Biology Molecular (Biology M).

Biology E concerns mainly with topics related to biological communities, population genetics, energy flow and ecosystems.

Biology M includes topics related to biochemistry, cell structure, photosynthesis and respiration.

Pattern of the exam

It is an hour long exam with 80 questions in all. Out of the 80 questions 60 are multiple choice, common to both E and M while 20 remaining questions are subject based on the basis of the choice elected i.e. E or M. 200-800 points are awarded.

The questions are divided into three major groups based on the type of the skill required to answer a particular question.

The questions are divided into three major groups based on the type of the skill required to answer a particular question.

Conceptual and knowledge based questions. (30%) It tests the ability to recall the concept and answer accordingly E.g. What is the location of cellular respiration? 4 choices will be given and best appropriate answer needs to be chosen
Application based questions. (35%) It tests the understanding of the subject and analysis the data to reach a conclusion. E.g. A hypothetical situation is given where one needs to determine the effect of decrease in temperature on the metabolism of a bird or a lizard.
Interpretation based questions. (35%) This section tests the ability to analyze the data given in the form of a chart or graph and the questions that follows. E.g. The growth curve of bacteria at 37°C is given based on the observation of the graph predict the time when the growth is maximum

 Important tips:

  • Use of calculators is not allowed.
  • Both the tests cannot be taken on the same dates, but can be taken on two different dates.
  • For every right answer one point is awarded,1/4 mark is deducted for a wrong attempt and 0 points awardee for a blank   answer.
