Title: How to make diluted solution?
Post by: prasamb@yahoo.com on October 27, 2022, 11:41:56 PM
how can 500 ml of a .50 M calcium nitrate solution be prepared for a 1.80 M calcium nitrate stock solution. Be sure to be very specific about volume of the stock solution
used, what steps you take, and what glassware is used

--> figured out that using M1V1=M2V2 , we need 139 ml of the 1.8 M caNO3 stock solution and 361 ml of water.
But what to write for what type of glassware used

it is like
1- use a pipette(or burette???) measure 139 ml of 1.8M CaNO3 solution and put in a beaker.
2- use another pipette (or burette???) to get 361 ml of water and mix in the same beaker?

would like to know the exact name of the glassware to be used

Thanks

You are using dilution law M1V1 = M2V2
To make a solution of 500.0 mL we use volumetric flask which are very accurate.
Pipettes are for very small volume like 1mL or 5mL or 10 mL .
Burettes are used generally during titrations  and it can have max volume of 50.0 mL.
Best option here to measure stock solution is graduated cylinder.
it is like
1- use a graduated cylinder measure 139 ml of 1.8M CaNO3 solution and put in a round bottom flask of 500.0mL.
2-Add water in the flask upto the mark of 500.0 mL.
There is no need of measuring the volume of water..
