The measure of water hardness is the combined concentration of calcium and magnesium ions.EDTA forms chelating stable complexes with both of them and the concentration of complex can be determined by titration.  EDTA is a salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetate ion and is hexadentate(6 donor sites). You will learn about it in 12th cbse and IIT chemistry as coordination complexes.
