Title: From the book
Post by: Aditi on July 01, 2024, 01:15:08 PM
Hi, I had a question on this problem. To find the density of Indium don't you use the formula D=M/V? I used that but got confused on what to  plug in the volume, because they mentioned 48.6 cm cubed, and 46.3 cm cubed. So, which value would I use to plug in the equation n, also I plugged both in, but I got completely different values from what is given in the multiple-choice, I got 0.342 and 0.359

Ohhh, wait. I just realized that you must subtract the two numbers and then plug in that number. But is it still A or B? The answer says B, but can't it also be A?

For this question, I believe you have to apply the sig fig rules so, that when you calculate 16.61/2.3 for the density, you look for the LEAST precise number. So, 2.3 is the least precise because it has only 2 sig figs compared to 16.61, which has 4 sig figs. So, the answer must contain only 2 sig figs. So, B is correct as 7.2 has only 2 sig figs.

I think both of you worked out the answer very nicely.
